CANON Macross Frontier
CANON POINT Post-series
HISTORY: http://macross.wikia.com/wiki/Sheryl_Nome
PERSONALITY: As the "Galactic Fairy," the top pop idol in the known galaxy, Sheryl Nome is on top of the world to start Macross Frontier, and she acts like it. She's a proud, willful young woman who knows that she's made it to the top by virtue of her own talent and hard work, and expects that people acknowledge that. She demands people acquiesce to her wishes-- particularly for her shows, which she insists on full creative control over-- and expects a certain level of treatment and rule-breaking (or at least rule-bending) to favor her. It's not that she's stuck-up or conceited per se, she's just very proud of how far she's come and has the sort of ego one might expect from it. She's very confident in her own abilities; one reason she typically gives for trying something that might be beyond her is "because I'm Sheryl Nome."
Her pride, haughty attitude and willful temperament can cause problems for her, though. Sheryl has very few genuine friends in all the galaxy, partly due to her fame and status and partly due to-- as her initial caretaker on the Macross Frontier colony ship says in exasperation behind her back-- she can be kind of a bitch. It isn't that she's an unkind person or particularly cruel, she's just sort of a diva; she's on top of the world, a creative artiste adored by millions, and she knows it. She can be perfectly pleasant to get along with when she's not being a professional, but those moments are rare and far between; she has very little that could be considered a proper social life. The closest thing she has to a friend to start the series is her manager Grace, which winds up biting her in return.
More directly, her headstrong, stubborn nature and confidence in her ability to do just about anything she sets her mind to wind up nearly killing her no less than three times during the series. The first, she's determined to track down an escaped cat-like critter that had made its way off (into public) with her undergarments, and straps in to one of the EX-Gear flight suits that she'd just done the most basic training with... only to fail to lock the restraints and nearly fall to her death. The second, she's determined to perform on a far-off planet for rebellious troops despite feeling a little ill, only to collapse and be taken hostage when it turns out the disease is more serious than she'd expected. In the third, she's the only conscious pilot in the cockpit of a space fighter and resolves that she can fly it herself, only to be shot down and forced to eject within literal seconds (not being a trained pilot in the slightest).
Beyond her haughty initial impressions and headstrong attitude, Sheryl is a natural performer who understands the power she has as an idol to influence people. She realizes that her songs (and, admittedly, her figure) give people hopes and dreams, and performs for the people who love her as much as she does for her own benefit. She freely offers Ranka, an aspiring idol, tips to follow her dreams and to pursue her own ambitions... which winds up backfiring on her when Ranka supersedes her as Macross Frontier's number-one star, particularly given the mysterious power Ranka has to influence the terrifying Vajra.
While Sheryl is obviously proud and demanding, she also has something of a romantic streak in her. Not just "romantic" in terms of love-- though her steady falling for the young pilot Alto is an increasingly vulnerable chink in her emotional armor-- but in terms of how she views performing. She grew up as a street urchin living a very difficult life, and now not only does she live more glamorously than anyone else, but she has thousands of people cheering for her, whose emotions she's captivating. She views her music-- her performance-- as something deeply integral to her life and who she is.
The latter half of Macross Frontier is a traumatic conga-line of despair for the Galactic Fairy. Not only does Ranka Lee, the girl who she'd offered friendly advice to, surpass her in stardom almost overnight, becoming the hope of the Frontier colony fleet-- and a real rival for the affections of Alto-- but it's revealed that the mild fever and flu she had is instead something far more serious, a "V-Type Infection" that has reached its terminal stages and will kill her within months. And that the one responsible for infecting her many years ago in her childhood was her manager and only friend, Grace, who had been trying to use her as a test experiment, and who is now abandoning her to die since she's outlived her use as a test case.
In the midst of her despair, Sheryl finds strength and will through her music; in a very moving scene late in the series, she decides that she will be the voice of all those despairing like her, and sings to comfort a terrified crowd huddled in a shelter.
With her time running out, she finds joy in living a simpler, quiet life and comfort in her growing romance with Alto (and a little bit of hedonism like drinking). She admits to Alto that she's afraid of dying-- of course she's afraid to die-- but he, and her music, give her the strength to endure and to face it bravely. She's more afraid to not live in her last days. When it's revealed that the final stage of the V-Type infection gives her voice the ability to affect and calm the Vajra, the same power that Ranka had, she accepts her dying duty to sing for the people of the Frontier. She decides that she'd rather perform to the very last and die on stage rather than meekly fading away.
Of course, her initial good deed in helping Ranka does come back around to help, instead of punish. Ranka's symbiotic nature with the Vajra and the V-Type particles gives her the power to neutralize Sheryl's illness for good. Sheryl's early aid to an up-and-coming singer gave her a rival in stardom and in love, but it wound up saving her life-- and giving her the first true, genuine friend she's likely ever had.
On some level, Sheryl is very comfortable with her sexuality and status as a sex object, but only on her own terms. It's one thing to wear skimpy outfits or behave in tittilating ways (like making out with a holographic version of herself) on stage, or to even wear revealing clothes on a date, because that's what she chooses to wear and do. Having someone accidentally see her topless, though? Yeah, she's going to smack them.
Sheryl is a driven young woman with boundless creative talent who yearns to connect with others and does so through her music, while being a surprisingly kind-- if somewhat inclined to teasing-- person when you get to know her.
CANON POWERS: Sheryl has virtually no canon "powers" beyond that which a normal human would have. She's an incredibly talented performer and singer skilled at songwriting and everything that comes with it, but her only "power" beyond the mundane is that which her terminal-stage V-type infection gives her-- her singing produces Fold waves that can be heard and understood by the insectoid Vajra.
OTHER: TL;DR: Sheryl is a driven, mature young woman who is understandably proud of herself, a little haughty, but wants to use her song to help people and create hope in the midst of despair.

MAGIC ABILITY: Sheryl's magic ability will be Magical Performance:
1) Sheryl has the ability to produce instrumental music from nothing to accompany any song, whether it's one of hers or not. As a songwriter and musician, she can write new music, but she cannot magically mimic the sound of any instrument she's never heard before.
2) While performing, she has the ability to change her basic appearance at will. Her general body type and shape will stay the same, but she can change her clothing, her hair style and color. So while she couldn't make herself taller, shorten her hair, or make her body into that of a man, she could give herself heels, stick her hair up in a bun or hidden under a cap, or make her clothing something that conceals/binds her chest to make her appearance look more androgynous.
The changes are permanent until she changes them again, which must be while singing, though this could be as simple as singing in the shower. Any items of clothing that are changed are also permanently changed, even if she takes it off (that cute blouse she was wearing? It's now a jacket, until she turns it back).
Any items of clothing she changes must generally be the same general kind of clothes, worn in the same part of the body. She couldn't change a headband into a pair of shoes, for instance. However, she could turn a skirt into a dress, the dress into a blouse, and the blouse into a jacket... if she really wanted to.
ANY WEAPONS/MAGICAL ITEMS?: Sheryl will arrive with her single Fold Quartz earring, an earring that amplifies the Fold Waves produced by her singing. Granted, this might not do anything unless there are any Vajra in the area, but then again, it just might? (This would be up at the mod's discretion.)
ANY PETS?: None!
